Dream

So today I had an appointment to talk about support and services for me while I finish college and find a job. During the appointment I had to answer many questions about all of my medical stuff, how my CP and learning disability affects my ability to get a job. I have never really gotten a job. It’s not like I can carry stuff and be a waitress. I can walk ok but not enough to work as a waitress. So I baby sit and volunteer at our local Board of MRDD. After explaining about my learning disability and how it makes it hard to spell. I told the guy that I type every thing the CP makes it hard to write and typing is easier. Next I explained that I use a reading device on the computer to read my papers for me so I know if the words that spell check does not get are what I want.

Well he told me that if I can’t spell than I CAN’T TEACH. Come on I’m using my resources and getting the job done. I’m doing ok in college and I was so shocked I left the meeting with out saying anything. I mean this guy has never seem a writing sample or even asked about my grades. So I have a month before my next meeting to make phone calls and ask teachers if they could do the job if they can’t spell. Its not like everyone spells perfect and its not like I will not spell check my parent letters or paper work.

I understand they don’t want me to waste their money but they want people with disabilities to get a job and do what they love.

On my mind

I love TLC Little People Big World show. At first I was not sure if it was going to be one of those sappy TV show that were all about feeling bad about for them. The show was great and I really like watching it. While none of them have CP its all about being normal and getting acceptance.

After watching the latest episode I started to think. None of the attractions at the farm see to be accessible for people like me. Even Matt (the dad) has trouble getting around. In a few shows someone carried him down the stairs. Come on if the owner can’t get around then he should start looking at making the farm more accessible of everyone. I mean he even has his own company that makes items to assist short stature people in hotels.
It makes you think.
